The Gospel.

We live in a society that the world of “entertainment” is at the heart of everything. When we go to church, we have to be entertained all the time.  Our attention spans only last for 20-30 min for a sermon, and then we begin to doodle on our notes sheet.  Many churches are starting to utilize and spend thousands and thousands of dollars on lighting  consoles, hazers, LEDs etc…  Which can absolutely create a very powerful environment (like that at worship conferences such as Passion in Atlanta, GA.)  However, if we put the majority of our focus on the image we present on stage.  Or have a ministry for every little thing one can think of, we have missed the point.  The point of having different ministries within a church or an organization is to share the gospel with more people. NOT to brag about how many numbers you can bring in on a Sunday morning.

We that our worship leaders can write some cool chords and lyrics every now and then…  But with out the breath of God, it is all pointless.  The bible tells us in Matthew 28:19-20 it says,

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

I challenge you to utilize all the resources God has blessed you and your church/ministry with.  But I also challenge you to make sure that the gospel is the primary focus of it all.

The Purpose of Church

Posted: May 30, 2012 in The Church

The Gospel.

Where is your identity found? A sport? A person? A Family name? In Christ?

When someone looks at you do they see Christ?  Or do they see a person who sometimes goes to church or youth group, or maybe… just maybe reads their bible from time to time?

“You are the light of the world. A city in a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14-16

Identity – n – The collective aspect of the set of characteristics by which a thing is definitively recognizable or known.

The bible tells us that we are the light of the world and that we are to let our light shine before everyone.  Now what exactly does walking in the light look like?

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

– 1 John 1:5-7

John makes it clear that in order to walk with God and have fellowship with him, we must not allow the darkness (sin) to rule over our lives.  That means for all of us out there, whatever it is that you struggle with (jealousy, lust, anger, being judgmental, etc…) we’ve got to put things in our lives to prevent our sin.

When we walk in the light and with God, NOTHING can stop us.  Toby Mac once told me that, “If God gives you a vision for something, he will provide the people and the resources around you for that to succeed.”

Be encouraged as you go about your day today that God has given you a bright light!  That you matter and that we all have to let our lights shine where there is darkness!

Worship tip of the week! – Transitions

Posted: September 22, 2011 in Worship

Hey guys! Here’s a worship tip of the week for all you worship leaders out there!!

Church/worship services are filled with transitions! And we all love smooth transitions!  Transitions between songs, transitions between the pastor and going back into music.

Here’s something to think about —-  When transitioning from one song to another, you are not just changing songs, you are creating an environment.  —– An easy way to approach this when picking songs in a worship set, is to try and group them in the same key.  For example….

Song  (key of C)

Welcome/Greeting takes place

Song (Key of B)

Song (Key of B)

Song (Key of B)

Then the pastor gets up to give a message

Song (Key of A)

Song (Key of A)

Keeping songs in the same key will allow you to flow from one to another!

Also!!  Sit down with your speaker or pastor, and find out their closing points so you can be ready to go when he’s wrapping up.  Don’t make him have to call your name so you know when to go back on stage.

Hope this helps guys!!

Blessings,  Matt

Hey guys!

What on Earth is a quiet time???  The phrase “quiet time” really isn’t all that significant.  It’s just a term that many people use when they are praying, or studying God’s word.  It’s their quiet time between them and God.

Now many people think that when you read your bible you need to study it and pray for hours on end.  That if you don’t “you’re not a good christian.”  Well that’s a bunch of crap.  I quiet time can be anything from just reading 5-10 verses, to studying the bible for hours on end.

We live in a sinful world, and everyone has a sinful nature by default.  You can’t fight it!  We are either growing closer to God, or falling away from him.  There is no staying neutral.

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.  I wish you were one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”   – Revelation 3:15

I just wanted to through out an idea out there for you all…..

I am reading the bible from the beginning.  From Genesis til….. whenever I decide to do something different I guess.  I figured, I have heard all these stories about Jonah and the Whale and Noah and his ark, but have I actually studied and read them???  Not entirely!  I would love it if you would like o join me!! Just start by reading 5 minutes a  day!!!  5 MINUTES!!!

Guatemala Day 6

Posted: July 28, 2011 in The Church

Today we traveled from Antigua to Pana which took about 2 1/2 hours on the bus.  Was kinda a long ride lol but sure enough we got there.  We worked on building a house today, mixing concrete and building the foundation.  There were chickens running around the work site, so I decided to be like Rocky and catch one with my hands hahaha.  And I most definitely did!!  Then we had to hike up part of a mountain because it was raining and the van couldn’t make it up with the weight of the 12 of us in it.  Probably the best leg work out since playing football at FAU hahaha.

Tomorrow is out last day of evangelism, kinda sad I know 😦  We’ve all gotten so great at all of the parts! and it’s been so much fun!!
